COMMUTER TRAIN STATION

A train station helps this Village get on board

The existing Northbrook train station was inadequate and outdated.  The community needed a larger station that would work in harmony with the village center.  Community participation in the design process was extensive, and budget restrictions were stringent. The building needed to withstand heavy and continuous use.  The solution recalls the historical building type, using extensive detail and masonry patterning to recall 19th Century stations all along the commuter corridor north of Chicago.  The brick pattern allows for differential reading of scale.  Dormers, brick masonry inside and out, copper flashing and gutters, ceramic tile floors and exposed wood trusses all work together to evoke a sense of the past.
