STUDIO THEATRE, NWMSU

Black Box/White Box dramatic dichotomy

The new Black Box Studio Theatre at NWMSU was envisioned as an opportunity to engage patrons in the ‘backstage’ experience through creative use of lighting and a backstage aesthetic in the public areas.  This addition to an existing proscenium theatre completes the performing arts center, creating a 200 seat venue for experimental performances in a flexible space.  Design challenges included accommodation of significant grade changes and the utilization of form and materials that would complement the existing iconic 80’s building.
