A house with a ‘surprise inside’
Like a Tootsie Roll with the ‘surprise inside’, the addition to this mid-century ranch wraps around a new open atrium. The constraints of a small corner lot meant the only build-able area was to the front of the house. A conventional addition would have compromised the natural light for the main living areas. That challenge was overcome by setting the new master suite and entry foyer away from the existing house. The resulting exterior atrium works like the hole in a doughnut - hidden from the street and providing a dynamic source of light and ventilation to all the rooms that surround it. The position of the addition also allowed for a transformation of the exterior style and character of the home in a way that is both distinctive and contextual.
